Cleantech Friendship Group calls for an ETS review that supports European cleantech

July 29, 2026

Members of the Cleantech Friendship Group have sent a joint letter to European Commissioner for Climate, Net Zero and Clean Growth Wopke Hoekstra, urging him to place European cleantech scale-up at the centre of the ETS review.

In the letter, MEPs stress that recent geopolitical events have exposed Europe’s strategic vulnerability through its dependence on fossil fuel imports, highlighting the need for strengthening Europe’s economic and energy security. Electrification powered by homegrown clean energy is the way forward.

The signatories view the ETS review as an opportunity to strengthen both the carbon market itself and the strategic use of the investment it generates in European clean technologies, while adapting to an evolving geopolitical context. They call on the European Commission to integrate three priorities in the EU ETS review legislative proposal:

1) Enhance the EU ETS to boost cleantech investment

2) Strengthen the EU Innovation Fund to scale European cleantech

3) Leverage the EU ETS to accelerate industrial electrification and strengthen EU energy security

Members of the Cleantech Friendship Group look forward to working together with the European Commission to reach a constructive result for the European cleantech industrial sector through this ETS review.
