MEPs call for a State Aid Framework matching Europe’s clean industry ambitions

July 15, 2025

On June 10, Members of the Cleantech Friendship Group sent a joint letter to Executive-Vice President Teresa Ribera urging the European Commission to strengthen the EU’s State Aid Framework in support of Europe’s clean industrial transition.

The letter highlights Europe’s need to react to this moment of global competition and geopolitical shifts with a bold and unified response. Clean technologies can help the EU meet its climate targets, boost its industrial competitiveness, and provide energy security and resilience. While Europe has become a powerhouse in cleantech innovation over the past decade, it struggles at scaling these technologies due to a lack of strategic support mechanisms.

In the letter, Members of the CFG call for a Clean Industrial State Aid Framework (CISAF) that strengthens Europe’s global competitiveness in cleantech manufacturing through a set of measures aimed at providing simplified support to SMEs and scale-ups, unlocking private capital, and giving Member States the flexibility to test support mechanisms to innovative companies under the next EU budget. By taking these steps, Europe can unlock its ambitions for a competitive and clean industrial future.
