October 2, 2025

On 30 September, Members of the Cleantech Friendship Group LídiaPereira, Thomas Pellerin-Carlin, Pascal Canfin, Bruno Tobback, Michael Bloss,Christophe Clergeau, Pierre Jouvet, Sofie Eriksson, Sara Matthieu, LiesbetSommen, Radan Kanev and Kai Tegethoff sent a written question on the topic ofbatteries to the European Commission.

Batteries are crucial enablers of Europe’s electrificationand cleantech transition. The written question highlights several of thechallenges faced by European battery cell producers, such as the significantcost gap with China and increasingly with the US, market uncertainties, and theneed for transitional production support.

In this context, the MEPs ask the Commission to providedetails on what the direct production support to EU battery producers willentail, how these support measures will be coordinated with demand-sidepolicies, and whether there will be tariffs on Chinese batteries in the future.
